Title: Whither the Eastern Province?
Collarless Wretch - September 26, 2006 03:48 AM (GMT)
Just a modest query. It seems the Eastern Province of the CEC has undergone rather dramatic change. It is already down a bishop and will soon be down an archbishop, which, if my count is correct, means there is one bishop left standing in the province. Does that mean the cathedral of the diocese of Delmarva becomes the provincial cathedral and the bishop thereof becomes then archbishop, or is a new archbishop to be installed-enthroned-whatever in Virginia. Or does the province get swallowed up by Northeast or Southeast or half and half or some other such thing? Just wondering.

When Bp. Zampino resigned, the clergy of the Diocese of Maryland started reporting directly to Abp. Sly. When Abp. Sly’s resignation becomes effective (Nov.1) the clergy of both the Diocese of Maryland and the Diocese of the Potomac will report to Abp. Adler. It is up to him (and his Council) to determine the future of these Dioceses.

Thanks for your reply. This is clearly the "official" plan, but is difficult for me to deal with in real day-to-day terms. It tells me that here we have a province with only three diocese of significant size. One has a bisop, the other two will have no local episcopal oversight come November 1. Instead clergy will answer to the patriarch who is on the opposite coast and who in any case is most likely headed for a "secret sabattical" or some such thing for who knows how long and perhaps for the duration. These diocese also fall under the direction of the patriarch's council, and just who is that at this point. Does anyone from the eastern edge of the continent have voice in this group. I get a sense from my own examination of what little information is available that there is a real effort on the part of the powers that be to keep those who fill the pews and the offering plates in the dark. If I am wrong, or if my understanding is flawed, please show me the error of my ways.

In my *opinion* there are two choices that would be vying for oversight of the Eastern Province: Adler and Bates, not for the pastoral oversight, but for the tithe checks. Let's face it, neither of these men answer phone calls, letters or emails from clergy or laymen under their covering unless it is a complaint against someone they commonly dislike or unless they are part of the inner circle or good 'ole boys club.
Bishop Lipka will NEVER be offered the Eastern Province. Why? 1) He is too Catholic. 2) He is too honest. 3) He does not play the political games that one has to play to be give such responsibility in the CEC. He would be a WONDERFUL GODLY man to shepherd this hurting flock, but it will NEVER happen!
truth_seeker - September 27, 2006 03:29 PM (GMT)
Just my two cents' worth:
Bates is already overseeing the former GLD. Of course, that doesn't include many churches.
Also, in Bp. Bates' defense, he has answered all e-mails sent from this location. Again, that doesn't include many e-mails, either!
Each man is on a journey...God bless us all, wherever the road may lead.

I tend to agree. Regardless of whatever issues are on the table, long-distance Episcopal oversight just doesn't work. In my own experience, Wisconsin to Kansas was difficult enough. I can't imagine California to Virginia. Frankly, from a logistical standpoint, any distance more than a couple of hundred miles (at the most) is extremely problematic.

Hey, Tony Baloney,
(I do like that moniker!)
I have refrained from posting on this forum many times (this is only my 4th post?)...just kept my little thoughts to my little self.
Just have to say, though, we began RCIA last night.
Does that mean I'm crossing the Tiber?
BTW, I may have to change my own moniker, as I'm being confused with Truth Speaker.
Oh, well.
Sorry to get off subject. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.....

Yes, my dear brethren, after much prayer, our family is moving on home to Rome.
I have hesitated to post on the forum previously, as this does not seem to be popular with some still in the CEC.
For the record, though, there is no ill-will, and we did not leave due to hard feelings, etc. etc. etc. Just knew that we had to continue the journey, until we found home.
BTW, does anyone know who the former CEC priest is, who is supposed to be on Journey Home this coming Mon.?

Former ECUSA/ CEC priest James Pinto. He was a part of CEC for Life or instrumental in its development, I believe. His character is said to be impeccable. I will be watching closely on Mon.. You can catch it Wed. evening late as well.

I have had the honor of knowing Jim Pinto for many years although since leaving the CEC I have not spoken to him. (not for any other reason except the fact our relationship was all based in church activity)
When he left the CEC to continue his journey home to Rome he did it well and with great care. (at least from my view from a distance).
His work and passion for the protection of the unborn is truly a blessing from God.

Is this a repeat program? My mother in law gave me a VHS cassette of him on the Journey Home a couple years ago. I can admit now that it DID make me squirm a bit, as I was brand new in the CEC. But I didn't squirm enough to join the "whore of Babylon (JUST KIDDING)" yet.
I probably still have it. It would be interesting to watch it again now.
For the naysayers, who ask...why is this relevant to the topic? BECAUSE I am from the Eastern Province, and I'm going to Rome. I say "going" because until Easter I'm kind of in no man's land...boot camp, as it were.
Tony, the Baloney Man, is also from my parish, but I can't really say for sure what he's doing. You'd have to ask him yourself. I can't get a straight answer from the guy, as hard as I try. Talk about elusive!

Jaybird - September 30, 2006 12:54 PM (GMT)
I just had another thought. I wonder, if it IS a new program, if he'll reference the "current crisis" in the CEC? Surely, he must be in contact with some CEC folks, wouldn't you think? Michael Cumbie didn't say anything when he was on.
On the other hand, since he's so involved in the Pro-Life movement, he may be talking about that. At least in my diocese, there's a 10-day prayer/fasting event from 1-10 October to end abortion. If that event is nationwide, that may be the topic du jour.
I'll try to remember to watch or record the program.

A,
Here's his bio. The "old Catholic" priesthood referred to in the article from mikecumbie.org is the Charismatic Episcopal Church. He was on EWTN a month or two ago. Funny guy. Jaybird
From the heart of the Deep South, steeped in Southern Baptist tradition Michael Cumbie's call from God to preach the Gospel came at age 14. At age 19, while attending college and working on a degree in Music Education Michael experienced a life changing charismatic encounter with the Holy Spirit. Increasingly dissatisfied with fundamentalist, evangelical preaching of the Gospel, he began to understand just exactly how the early church had worshiped with its signs and symbols - and its focus on the Eucharist.
Although a Protestant Pastor for 23 years, Michael ultimately realized that to be truly in one accord with "ancient historic" Christian practice, means to be in union with Rome, where the chair of the successor of St. Peter is located, he continued his studies and research. Michael was even ordained to the sacred priesthood (see picture gallery 2) with an "old catholic" group in 1993. Eventually he realized that his denomination and the Roman Catholic Church would not become one any time soon, and he discovered that this quest for the fullness of Faith could only be realized in the Roman Catholic Church. In 2001, Michael and his three children were received into the Catholic Church. Michael's wife Sherry came back to the Catholic Church that day as well, after a 28-year absence.

Jaybird,
Funny guy indeed! Mike and his family came to my parish in '94, along with a bishop in the CEC and some other clergy families. He was (and still is, presumably) a charming, witty, Godly man with a great sense of humor.

Speaking of Journey Home, you guys should have seen David Zampino on there last year. I had the opportunity to do that, providentially.
I was travelling for work, and I was about to head out to get a late snack. I was surfing the channels on the TV, and there were my old college friends (David and his wife) on EWTN! Needless to say, I went to bed hungry that night. I couldn't believe my "luck" in catching the program. I don't really watch EWTN. God is so cool!
Our moderator is a TV star.
Oh, and to keep on topic (Eastern Province), my husband just called and is on his way back from going to confession after lo these many years as a Roaming Catholic. He's back in full communion with the Catholic Church! Score one more for the Catholic team from the Eastern Province.
We're celebrating with Dunkin Donuts!

Thanks to a great musical legend and a true American icon... Lynyrd Skynyrd
"COMIN' HOME"
(Allen Collins -- Ronnie VanZant)
It's been so long since I've been gone
Another day might be too long for me
Traveling around I've had my fill
Of broken dreams and dirty deals
A concrete jungle surrounding me
Many nights I've slept out in the streets
I paid my dues and I changed my style
Seen hard times. All over now
I want to come home. It's been so long since I've been away
And please, don't blame me 'cause I've tried
I'll be coming home soon to your love to stay
I miss old friends that I once had
Times they changed and I'll be glad when I go home
I don't know why this all came to me
But why I'm here I really can't see. And now...
I want to come home. It's been so long since I've been away
And please, don't blame me 'cause I've tried
I'll be coming home soon to your love to stay
Coming home to stay
Coming home to your love, mama
I've seen better days
I miss old friends that I once had
Times ain't changed and I'll be glad when I go home
I don't know why the thought came to me
But why I'm here I really can't see. And now...
I want to come home. It's been so long since I've been away
And please, don't blame me 'cause I've tried

"FREEBIRD"
(Allen Collins -- Ronnie Van Zant)
If I leave here tomorrow
would you still remember me
For I must be travelling on now
there's too many places I gotta see
And if I stay here with you girl
things just wouldn't be the same
For I'm as free as a bird now
and this bird you cannot change
and the bird you cannot change
and the bird you cannot change
Lord knows I can't change
Bye bye it's been sweet love
though this feeling I can't change
Please don't take it so badly
Lord knows I must play
And if I stay here with you girl
things just couldn't be the same
For I'm as free as a bird now
and this bird you cannot change
and the bird you cannot change
and the bird you cannot change
Lord knows I can't change
*8 minute triple guitar boogie... YEAAAAAH!!! :P*
God bless you guys! And I'm being really frank about it, just as Ronnie Van Zant was passionate and sincere with his lyrics.
