Just a question for CATHOLIC SCHOLARS out there. What are your thoughts on "indulgences" and how would you explain it biblically and alongside the doctrine of grace.

Maybe some others will be able to give you some written explanations in their own words, but in the meantime, here's an audio explanation from Scott Hahn that I really enjoyed when investigating this doctrine:
Here ya go. I don't know if Dr. Hahn mentions this, but I think one key thing to remember in any discussion about Indulgences and Purgatory is this: both have ZERO to do with saving a person from the eternal penalty of sin, which is Hell.
Another key thing to remember is that both are only of any worth due to the cross of Christ.
